Recruitment

Hello! My name is Cassy and I am the Recruitment Director for the UC Davis Panhellenic council.

Welcome to the Recruitment information page!  Please be sure to check back periodically as we will be updating this page on a regular basis.  I encourage you to consider Going Greek at UC Davis, as it is an amazing experience!  Going Greek presents so many great opportunities for today's collegiate women.  You will make lifetime friendships, participate in philanthropic activities, and be immersed in one of the most diverse, well-rounded communities college has to offer!  The UC Davis Greek community boasts eight NPC sororities, and during Fall Recruitment you will have the opportunity to meet each one!  We also have two wonderful associate Panhellenic sororities that participate in infmoral recruitment each quarter.

We hope our Greek Community can enrich your collegiate experience as much as it has ours.  Welcome to the University of California Davis!

Please refer to our "Frequently Asked Questions" section below, then if you have further questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me!

Sincerely,

Cassy Shoup
Panhellenic Recruitment Director

What is Membership Recruitment?

We are excited that you are considering joining a sorority at the University of California Davis. The UCD Panhellenic Council currently has 8 sororities participating in fall formal recruitment:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi

Formal Recruitment is the process by which women join one of these eight Panhellenic Sororities.                                                                                                                                                             Informal Recruitment is how you would join one of our two associate members: Alpha Kappa Delta Phi- UC Davis' Asian interest sorority, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi - UC Davis' Jewish interest sorority.  If you would like further information about informal recruitment, please contact Cassy Shoup, Panhellenic Recruitment Chair at cmshoup@ucdavis.edu.

The Formal Recruitment process here at UC Davis is a week long process in which you have the opportunity to meet each of the 8 NPC sororities offered on our campus.  During this week, you will also meet amazing young women like yourself who will be going through Recruitment with you. Informal recruitment takes place at the beginning of each quarter.

Formal Recruitment at UC Davis is a mutual selection process; at the end of each day, you prioritize the chapters you would like to return to the following day. Similarly, the chapters narrow the amount of women they invite to back to their chapter events. Each day you will narrow your selection down by at least two than the day before, eventually ending with preference night, where you attend no more than two chapter events. The following day you will receive a bid from one of these chapters, upon which you will be invited to join that chapter!

To relieve the stress of this hectic but exciting week, you will be assigned a recruitment group led by a Recruitment Counselor who will help guide you through this process.  Your Recruitment Counselor is a disaffiliated sorority member associated with Panhellenic; she will be your greatest resource for this amazing experience!  Because you will be with the same group and Recruitment Counselor throughout the week, you immediately have the chance to make some life-long friends and at the very least, someone to share this amazing time with! Get excited!!  Again, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions :)

A Few Extra Things to Help You Out!

The Sorority Life!

Frequently Asked Questions!

In general, how much does being part of a sorority cost?
You will be fully informed of the costs for each specific chapter during recruitment week. Usually the cost is about $350-$500 per quarter, with the first year having more fees because national dues have to be paid. Sorry to be unspecific, each chapter varies, but that is the general range!

What if I have a time conflict during the week of recruitment?
If you have time conflicts, you will be excused from recruitment for legitimate excuses (these include placement exams, ICA sports, anything school related, or family emergencies/issues). Each excuse will be reviewed by the recruitment chair, but if it pertains to the above issues, you will be excused.

An excuse means that we will inform the chapters that you can not be there, and to please not penalize you for it. However, with the amount of women going through recruitment, Panhellenic can not make it so chapters have to invite back women who miss events that they are excused from. So, please miss ONLY for things absolutely necessary. The week of Recruitment, PLEASE inform your recruitment counselor of your commitments when they ask for them. It is not necessary for Panhellenic to know of your excuses until that time. From there, we will work with everyone individually to make there schedule work as best as we can around their time conflicts.

What is the appropriate clothing to wear during recruitment?
We want everyone to be comfortable at ALL times! You will get detailed clothing answers the week of recruitment, but we want everyone to ear what they feel most comfortable in each day. The general cloth is:

Day 1: Greek Life Faire Day
Casual clothes, shorts, t-shirt, sundress, ANYTHING. I would recommend shorts or a skirt, a sute short or tank top, and flip flops. The chapters will be wearing simple shorts or a skirts and matching tshirts. This day is the most casual and there is always a wide range of clothing. The entire event is in Freeborn hall.

Day 2: Open house Day
Casual clothing. There will be a LOT of walking on this day, and it will probably be very hot. I would recommend the same kind of outfit you wear for Greek Life faire day, with COMFORTABLE shoes. DO NOT WEAR HEELS. The different Chapters usually wear flip flops, short or skirts, and t shirts on this day as well.

Day 3: Philanthropy Day
Slightly dressier - There will be less walking on this day, but still a considerable amount, and it will still probably be hot. A nice sundress or skirt and top is good for this day. Still, I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes! If you prefer to wear heels, bring a pair of flip flops to run around in between events.

Day 4: Preference Night
Dressy - A cocktail dress and heels is generally what people wear for this event. The chapters will be wearing matching dresses and most likely heels, or nice flats.

Saturday bidy day
For this day, just come wearing a pair of shorts or jeans and a simple shirt or tank top. Each chapter gives you a bid day shirt to wear, so you will be changing into that!

Testimonials of active Greek members

"Going Greek has changed my experience at Davis for the better. Before rushing, I almost left Davis to go home to community college because I had such a hard time being here. I joined my house later freshman year and fell in love. It has truly made Davis a much better place for me." -Erica

"Recruitment is a fun and unique experience.  I know that it can be nerve racking at times but it's important to remember that you are great and that will reflect through all the conversations you have and chapters you talk to.  No matter what house you end up in The UC Davis greek system is cohesive and supportive of one another, you will make friends with people from all different chapters! So remember to enjoy the week and above all be yourself!  If you do these two things recruitment will be the beginning of all the fun things the greek system has to offer!" :)        - Marissa

"If I could give one piece of advice for recruitment:  BE YOURSELF.  The recruitment counselors will tell their girls that, but I hope they really do it.  If you are yourself, the house that you fit into best will find you and that is where you will be most comfortable.  Don't forget the girls in each sorority are as nervous as you, and they want to impress you more than you want to impress them.  So smile and get excited to get to know amazing girls through your recruitment journey!" - Jennifer

"As I left home, and  an amazing group of friends behind and began to prepare myself to attend UC Davis, a school with 23,000 undergraduate students, I began to panic. As a very social and people-loving person, I was afraid at the prospect of not knowing anyone. That was when I decided to go through recruitment, and boy am I glad I did. A sorority gives you about 100 girls with whom to share experiences and make strong friendships. There is always a familiar face on campus. Apart from enjoying my own sorority, I really enjoy the Greek community. You begin to know girls from every house and fraternity men and you form a social network of people, who, if nothing else, have in common with you the desire to meet new people. I have made so many great friends and have so many contacts within the Greek community that I know will be great for the next chapter in my life when I graduate from college and have to start fresh again. Recruitment can be a stressful time but its not something you should pass up! The most important thing is to be yourself and think about where you feel most comfortable and where you would fit in best. My feeling is that every girl ends up in the right place and every house has something to offer. Going Greek can give you memories that last a lifetime."  -Diane

"I went through recruitment as a sophomore, and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made all of my college career.  Even though I have a core group of friends outside the house, I have definitely met some of my closest friends.  I wouldn't change my Greek experience for anything.  It's definitely brought me some of the greatest memories I will remember forever." –Hillary
